ST, LOUIS (Sept. 8, 2016) – R. Michael Lowenbaum, founder of Lowenbaum Law, reveals what drove him to build a different kind of law firm in a just released book: “Rare Company: St. Louis Entrepreneurs and How They Got Their Start.”
“I’m the richest guy you know – and it’s got nothing to do with money,” begins chapter 2, which exclusively features Lowenbaum, the only entrepreneur in the book who started a law firm.
John Berglund, the author of “Rare Company”, said he asked Lowenbaum if he could tell his story because Lowenbaum’s success came from taking an approach contrary to every other law firm. At Lowenbaum Law, everyone is treated as if they’re partners in the business, including the assistants and paralegals. And lawyers are not rewarded for maximizing billable hours.
“I had heard about Michael’s unusual approach,” said Berglund. “I had also heard much of his firm’s success comes from the fact that he has ‘a thousand friends’ including many of the firms’ loyal clients.”
The book captures stories of family, pain and success, as told first-hand by St. Louis’ most famous and successful entrepreneurs including Maxine Clark, founder of Build-A-Bear Workshop, Ray Hartmann, founder of The Riverfront Times, Cliff Holekamp, founder of Foot Healers, Tom Schlafly, founder of St. Louis Brewery, Gina Hoagland, founder of Collaborative Strategies, and more.
In Lowenbaum’s chapter, the lawyer-entrepreneur reveals how the failure of his family’s business caused him to be a driven rainmaker starting at age 14. As a door-to-door Fuller brush salesman, he learned how important it was to connect with the customer, and later as a distributor for Weber grills, he convinced a local Sears store to let him barbeque—over charcoal in the store.
